Leadership in Combating Climate Change

For the past three decades, Katjana Ballantyne has been a pace-setting leader on sustainability and environmental justice in Somerville. As a Councilor and Mayor she's worked to combat climate change, reduce solid waste, and to increase open space and better develop climate resiliency. Mayor Ballantyne was the author and sole sponsor of the 2019 Somerville Green New Deal Resolution, she sponsored the City’s Zoning Code requirement for LEED Platinum level efficiency, she authored and sponsored Somerville's Native Trees and Planting Ordinance. I’ve just announced that by unanimous vote, the Somerville Planning Board adopted my administration’s Assembly Square Neighborhood Plan, marking a significant milestone in the City's efforts to guide sustainable development in one of its most rapidly evolving neighborhoods.

Leadership on Transportation and Mobility

For more than twenty five years, Katjana been a leader in working and advocating for basic transit infrastructure to enable walkable, transit-oriented, mixed-use development in Somerville, increasing access to jobs while decreasing traffic and emissions. Katjana will continue her leadership as mayor, to create for a connected network of accessible, complete, safe streets that works for Somerville.

The entire WHCIS community is now together in their interim home in Edgerly Education Center, and Mayor Ballantyne has focused her efforts on opening an entirely new facility in 2031 (That’s only six years away, when a typical school building project takes ten years or more).
